A state of the art 25 foot mobile climbing wall designed as part of the Partners for Healthy Active Children/Compañeros Para Niños Sanos y Activos, an element of a federally funded grant provided by the Department of Education's Safe and Drug Free School initiative. The Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant was awarded to The YMCA of Metropolitan Tucson to help design in-school and out-of-school time curriculum fighting youth obesity and juvenile diabetes.
The grant partnered the University of Arizona, Sunnyside Unified School District, the Department of Education and the YMCA of Metropolitan Tucson (lead agency) in developing dynamic curriculum intended to increase children's activity levels and nutritional awareness.
The mobile climbing wall has enjoyed more than 5,000 youth climbers and will have implemented in every
elementary and middle school in the Sunnyside Unified School District by the end of the 2005/06 school year. Every SUSD elementary PE teacher has been trained on using the climbing wall as part of their "Project Adventure" PE curriculum and has adopted by the University of Arizona's department of Nutrition Sciences as a requirement for students being trained as PE teachers.
The mobile climbing wall is a patented design, manufactured by Extreme Engineering, Inc. who also designed a 5 station Auto-Belay™ safety system. The safety system gives any child 40 lbs to adult 250 lbs a challenging but safe climb.
The "Mountain on the Move" has been featured at many youth events such as the Halloween carnival at the
Northwest YMCA, the Village 20 Canada Hills Community Association fall bar-b-que, the Tucson Skate Jam, the YMCA flag football jamboree, Healthy Kids day and more.
